Developing a Film at Home in 7 Easy Steps

Film cameras can create a unique atmosphere at any photo. Any photographers use them even today, in the age of digital cameras. Their main advantage? They look incredible on any online photography portfolio website.

If you would like to try your skills in film photography as well but have little to no experience in how to deal with it, this guide will be useful for you. And don't worry, no darkroom is required!!

Step 1. Mix the chemistry.

After choosing the developer, simply read the instruction on how to mix it. The process may vary depending on the developer you buy.

Step 2. Load the film.

The next step is to load the film you want to develop in the special development tank. Be sure to close it before the next step. Use a changing bag to feed the film into the reel.

Step 3. Add water.

Pre-soak your film before adding the developer. The tank always comes with a hole that you can use to fill it with water to the brim. Leave for up to 5 minutes.

Step 4. Develop.

Pour the water out of the tank and slowly fill it with the development solution. Check the agitation recommendations on the package.

Step 5. Stop bath.

Get rid of the solution and use a stop bath and, then, a fixer.

Step 6. Rinse.

Do one final rinse of your film with lukewarm water. Simply put the tank under the tap for several minutes.

Step 7. Dry

Take out your film and hang it to dry. It'll take from 2 to 5 hours.
